Deep Vein Thrombosis
Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT, is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body.
Most clots occur in the leg or thigh. Sometimes the clot can dislodge and travel through the bloodstream, potentially to an artery in the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism, so treatment of DVT is crucial.
Procedure to treat DVT
The procedure to treat DVT, catheter directed thrombolysis, is preformed under imaging guidance by an interventional radiologist. Typically the procedure is performed in a hospital and is designed to rapidly break up the clot, restore blood flow within the vein and potentially preserve valve function to minimize the risk of post-thrombotic syndrome. New guidelines suggest better outcomes with interventional directed care for DVT, especially above the knee.
