Uterine Fibroids
A uterine fibroid are common, non-cancerous growths that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus.
These fibroids can range in size from tiny to as large as a cantelope. While fibroids may or may not cause symptoms, the size and location can lead to problems for some women.
Until recently, uterine fibroids were typically treated by performing a hysterectomy or myomectomy. Today, there are less invasive options that interventional radiologists at DRPC can offer.
Treatment for Uterine Fibroids
A uterine fibroid embolization is a procedure where a small catheter is guided into the uterine arteries and small particles, no bigger than a grain of sand, are injected. Those particles cause the fibroids to shrink and symptoms to fade.
The procedure is not painful and is typically performed in one to two hours. Patients typically spend one night in the hospital and resume light activities in a few days with normal routines in a week. Patients are scheduled for a follow-up MRI six months post procedure to confirm success.
